On December 17, 2025, Deutsche Bank announced the launch of Wero, an innovative digital payment app designed for clients across Europe. This initiative aims to streamline money transfers and online shopping, appealing to the growing demand for efficient payment solutions in the digital era.
"Following the successful launch at Postbank, we are very pleased to offer the full range of Wero’s functions at Deutsche Bank and Postbank," said Dominik Hennen, the Head of Personal Banking at Deutsche Bank. The Wero app allows users to send and receive money in real-time to family and friends throughout Europe and to make purchases at online retailers.
Postbank customers first accessed Wero's peer-to-peer transfer capabilities in November 2024, but the recent enhancements have now provided all users with the ability to shop online seamlessly. Hennen stressed the importance of this development saying, "Wero is a decisive step towards a unified European payment landscape. We offer our clients an innovative solution that simplifies private and e-commerce payments even across national borders."
The initiative aligns with Deutsche Bank's vision of enhancing connectivity in the European financial ecosystem. Kilian Thalhammer, Head of Merchant Solutions at Deutsche Bank, emphasized the app's potential reach, stating, "For Wero’s success, it is crucial that people can easily use the European payment solution in their daily lives. As The Global Hausbank, we not only offer Wero to our private clients, but are also a partner for European merchants and fintechs."
Martina Weimert, CEO of EPI Company, echoed these sentiments, calling the launch a critical development in payment solutions. "The launch of Wero by Deutsche Bank in Germany is a strong signal for the reachability and market penetration in Germany. We are very pleased to see Wero now enabling fast, secure P2P money transfers for all Deutsche Bank and Postbank customers, as well as instant and seamless payments at merchants that already accept Wero across Germany."
Wero operates under the umbrella of the European Payments Initiative (EPI), which was introduced in July 2024, bringing together 16 major European banks and payment service providers. Together, they aim to facilitate instant transfers without requiring IBAN or BIC inputs. As Hennen described, "Wero’s goal is to establish a unified mobile payment service, via a resolutely sovereign digital wallet for all of Europe."
Currently, the app's functionalities will continue to expand over time. Since November 2025, Wero has enabled payments at participating online shops. Upcoming features include managing recurring payments such as subscriptions and instore transactions. Additionally, there are plans to integrate features like installment payments and the incorporation of merchant loyalty programs.
Wero's design allows for straightforward integration with Deutsche Bank and Postbank accounts, enabling payments to be processed as simply as sending a message. According to bank officials, users will not need to top up their Wero account separately; funds will be debited or credited directly.
Future developments include integrating Wero with the existing “Deutsche Bank Mobile” and “Postbank” banking apps, offering clients the option to choose between these familiar mobile banking platforms and the new Wero app.
Deutsche Bank remains committed to facilitating innovation in personal and commercial banking, which is emblematic of its status as the leading bank in Germany with a global reach. As it continues to develop services like Wero, the bank seeks to solidify its role at the forefront of the digital banking transformation across Europe.
